Cormac Cullinan’s Law Firm to Counsel in Constitutional Court Case Against Fracking

Wild LawAccording to Business Report, Cullinan and Associates will be acting as counsel for the Treasure the Karoo Action Group (TKAG) when they take their case against hydraulic fracturing (fracking) in the Karoo to the South African Constitutional Court. Cullinan and Associates is the oldest environmental law firm in the Western Cape and is headed by Cormac Cullinan, author of Wild Law.

The coordinator of the TKAG, Jonathan Deal, is trying to get the government’s decision to lift the moratorium on the exploration of shale gas overturned. Neo Maditla, from the Cape Argus, reported that the TKAG is in the process of raising funds for the court case.

Jonathan Deal, the co-ordinator of the Treasure the Karoo Action Group (TKAG), said yesterday that the momentous battles mounted by businessmen activists Hugh Glenister and Terry Crawford-Browne had inspired him to carry on the fight against hydraulic fracturing, dubbed fracking, for shale gas in the Karoo.

Glenister successfully challenged the law establishing the Directorate of Priority Crime Investigation – known as the Hawks – in the Constitutional Court last year.

The Treasure Karoo Action Group (TKAG) says donations for its fight against fracking have been pouring in since the government lifted the moratorium on exploration for shale gas last week.

TKAG chairman Jonathan Deal said the organisation had received support from all over the world and that it had raised just over R100 000 over the weekend.
