Globalisation and Governance Useful in Understanding the Global Financial Crisis
Featuring a chapter by former South Africa Finance Minister Trevor Manuel, Globalisation and Governance should be essential reading when looking at how the developing world continues to change in the face of globalisation. What are the prospects for legal redress in the face of the global financial crisis?
With events moving fast in the direction of more political and social upheaval, governments and their populace more than ever need to find ways to counter discord.
The following article highlights the dramatic protests currently sweeping the globe, where tougher economic measures have meant that people’s lives have changed significantly. Recently Sudan announced austerity measures, which has meant quite a hike in prices. Protests that seek to replicate the changes seen in the Arab Spring have ensued, with Sudan’s embattled President Omar al Bashir denying that their cause is legitimate and claiming that outside forces seek to destabilise his regime:
Sudanese police fired teargas at protesters angered by rising prices on Sunday, witnesses said, after a senior official accused “Zionist institutions” of fanning anti-government demonstrations which echo Arab Spring unrest elsewhere.
For two weeks, anti-austerity protesters have been calling for the resignation of the government of President Omar Hassan al-Bashir, one of Africa’s longest-serving leaders.
